Camino del Cid.
Join us on an exciting journey through history following the journey of El Cid (actual name Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar). Luggage will be transferred to each hotel by van, and fully equipped mountain bike hire is included (Lights, tools, spares and bag for daily needs etc.)
We will visit two castles, Villena and Xativa, both important in medieval times.
Starting in Torrellano near Alicante airport, we will at first follow the EV8 Eurovelo route, part of a Europe wide network of cycle routes. We will reach Elche, where El Cid spent the winter of 1088. Then we pick up the Camino del Cid, following his footsteps as we head through historic cities such as Monforte del Cid. On to Villena, where King Alfonso VI unsuccessfully asked El Cid to wait for him in the surroundings of this city to join the royal troops and lift the Almoravid siege on the castle of Aledo, in possession of the Castilians. Then on to Xativa before reaching Valencia, El Cid’s seat of power until he died.
Part of our route will be on the Via Augusta, the first major backbone route of the Iberian Peninsula from over 2,000 years ago, with a route from Cadiz to the Pyrenees, continuing in France under the name of Via Domitia, and through Italy as Via Flamínia and Via Aurelia until it connects with Rome.
Friday will be a free day to explore the city of Valencia.
